here is a normal hob overflow and the pvc. the purple is the noise.

the pvc traps the water noise in the pipe so it doesn't escape into the room.

Well nobody said my sketches are the easiest to understand.

This was in response to a PM I received wondering if the pvc overflows in this thread:

were quiet compared to commercial overflows.

The purple trapazoid on the left is the noise the enters the room with a commercial u tube skimmer box type overflow. In the pvc version that noise is trapped in the pipe. although the purple in the pipe is probably hard to see in this sketch.

Of course you could muffle the commercial with some type of filter or even modify it with a durso or stockman standpipe. But that is not required with the pcv version I tested.

I still don't understand.....were these actual measurements of some kind? Is there a scale involved? Or is this simply a subjective drawing on your part?

Just a subjective sketch not meant to be an engineering drawing to build anything off of. Just to illustrate the pvc overflow in the link traps in the sound whereas the skimmer box/external box hob overflow allows noise to enter the room. It's clearer in the pictures in the link I posted. If it seems like something you might be interested in I could provide more detailed drawings or information. sometimes it is much harder to explain something then to actually build and test it.
