If you read to their points on how they are going to save the hobby, reefs, & the world in round 2 of operations, you come to #5.

5. Support cyanide detection testing, to the extent a valid, reliable, internationally accepted method is available that does not involve animal testing;

How is that going to work? Magic? Mr. Spock, please scan the fish with your handy science tri-corder and tell us if there is cyanide present.

Nahh we scared off all the MAC people long ago by asking difficult questions like "Where is all the money going".

I don't believe that is actually why all of them left. I believe it was more the combative atmosphere than the questions. I feel its a shame that they were scared away from the discussion here either way.

While it is true that some NPO's take shady advantage of the money the get, every NPO can be spun to look as if the money is being taken advantage of because part of what NPO's need to do to survive is generate money, spend money and talk about the money they generate and spend (I am, however, not saying that MAC did or didn't spend money well or poorly :D ). It is also interesting to note that sometimes money generated by NPO's is earmarked and must be spent on certain things.

Or it could be that they feel their primary interest is not in defending themselves on internet bulletin boards.

I think it's in the paper issue of the magazine - there's nothing on the magazine's home page.

Wouldn't funding research into a detection method be supporting "cyanide detection testing, to the extent a valid, reliable, internationally accepted method is available that does not involve animal testing"???

OR, that they would support it once it becomes available...

Theres a lot of different ways to interpret that. And it wouldn't have to be that they actually have a method to do it currently.

Not that I'm supporting them, but I do support some of the ideals they purport to stand behind. ;)

Supporting the easiest "ideals"

Postby cortez marine » August 14th, 2008, 5:28 pm

Norm,
You just spelled it out clearly.
You said...
" Not that I'm supporting them, but I do support some of the ideals they purport to stand behind."

Now....have you ever met anyone against mother, home and apple pie?
Is there anyone who does not support the easy to agree with ideals ?

The worth of any ideals are in the extent to which they are embedded in our actual behavior....not in our ability to fill in the blanks on a template.
Many a Sunday mornin' sermon is based on this premise.
Any group worth its salt must become a group that rises above is mere, easy to write initial words and create deeds, works and fruits.
Steve.
PS. No animal testing involved in the non existant CDT?
Classic!

Cyanide Testing

Postby PeterIMA » August 15th, 2008, 8:07 am

As you may know, there was a workshop sponsored by NOAA concerning Cyanide Detection Testing held in Orlando February 6-8th, 2008. Dr. Andrew Bruckner published a paper in Freshwater and Marine Aquarium magazine (August issue) about the workshop. The MAC failed to attend.

I don't recall any CDT method for marine ornamental fish that did not involve blending the fish sample.

If anyone wants a copy of Dr. Bruckner's paper (as a PDF) sent me a PM with your email address.

Maybe they put the whole Tuna fish in a blender to detect if mercury is present in the animal's meat. Blender anyone? :D
