So I started up a 70g "Wuss" tank...

Postby wings » October 17th, 2009, 12:41 pm

...according to Len.

Got a question.... It was started Wednesday. Every day, I've been taking my "hang on" filter from my FW planted tank, and shaking it in the 70 Gallon tank to get some bacteria started in the 70 G tank.

It's now Saturday. Can I dump a goldfish in there today, just to get the cycle going a bit more? Or is it too early?

 You can put fish in there, John.

Better than shaking in the filter is to put a handful of gravel in there.

The bacteria need food, which means dissolved organics.
You can put fish in right away, just go slowly.

When starting cichlid tanks I just put a few individuals in there and leave it for a few weeks, no problem.

I'm starting over with the "Wussie" tank too John. Maybe we can muddle through it together.

After keeping Central American cichlids, African cichlids, marine fish and reefs for years and years, I can't wait to go
back and experience what I skipped...a nice big wuss tank. I picture a 300 gallon fully planted tank with schools of Cardinal Tetras,
black skirts, some blue goaramis. It's going to be amazing.

Not for some years down the road though.
For now I'm stuck with a few tarantulas.

Yeah- this is totally something to look at in the living room, that's "calming". That's the key. I've done cichlids, and SW, and quite honestly, I just want something fun to watch where the fish aren't chasing other fish around to the point of exhaustion. SW - I was always checking levels, evaporation, temperature - it got annoying. Then, when I go on vacation, I have to basically train my double. One time, we came back to a leaky skimmer- and that sucked, because the following day, I had to drain the tank, replace the cardboard (partical board) stand. I think I'm cured...

I went with a 70 gal, and a classic eheim canister, with a dual air pump. And it's QUIET! Ahhh. Yeah, I'm a wuss, but a calm wuss. ;)

I'll get you some picks later when the lights come on. It's nothing fancy just a few plant's that need a lot of growing to do. I did make my own 3D back ground out of Styrofoam and concrete that came out pretty cool looking.
