Black tang availability?

Postby marillion » November 12th, 2009, 10:15 am

I'm thinking this may be the one tang I want to add to my tank.

What's the going rate on these guys? Are they more readily available than they were in the past?

Peace,

Chip

If you look at this site (a reef specific search engine), you will see a bunch listed, but they're all around $500 black tang

My wife likes black tangs (I do too) and wanted to get one, so I keep looking to see if the price is gonna drop, but not so far

Prices have jumped a lot in the past couple years. They used to range from $250-400, but it's now closer to $500 (and up) :(

I might even consider 250. At this point, I'm thinking I will get a purple tang before they hit black tang prices.

Out of curiousity (sp??) what's the allure of the black tang? Of the Zebrasomas, I personally prefer the purple and then the desjardini for looks - and they all seem to have the same personality. It's a personal preference of course.

Based on the low demand for Centropyge nox, I'd say it has more to do with their rarity than their looks. :P

Ditto :)

IMO black tangs are a bit ugly when larger.

I'm personally not a huge fan of the black tang - I really like the purple tang myself (or the powder blue), but my wife really loves them and wants one, so since I make 99% of the stocking decisions, I want to keep her involved and liking the tank. She has said they look devilish and "bad boyish" and that's why she likes them and the fact too that it is a somewhat unique/rare fish

They don't come in very often, and when they do there are usually only two or three at a wholesaler for retailers to choose from. I would agree with others who have said the price tag has to do more with them being more rarely collected. I would say I see them available on wholesale lists about half a dozen times each year, but it could be that I've overlooked other times when they have been available.

Hey so I found a pretty great site that has different sizes of black tangs. A friend of mine has been ordering fish from the site for awhile and said they are reliable. http://www.riverwonders.com/p-142-black ... lable.aspx

They used to be $75 - $100 from Hawaii; $175-275 retail. This was 8 years ago when I first starting paying attention to such things. Not sure what happened. The majority of specimens nowadays seem to be rostratum/scopas hybrids and are not really entirely "black" when they get past 3 inches.

My lfs has had a Black Tang for the last couple of months. It's a big one. Unfortunately it's not eating much though. The owner of the store says that the tang refuses prepared foods and will only pick at algae off the rocks. The price for him is around $600 though. I would've thought a big one would've been more expensive than that...
