Clipperton Atoll For Sale

Postby Heterodonut » December 16th, 2009, 12:10 pm

I saw recently where the Clipperton Atoll is for sale. All of 1235 Acres, to include the several islands that surround a blue lagoon. I would love to find a partner with which to purchase the island. Although the asking price was not listed (it's a matter of if you have to ask, you probably can't afford it) I was thinking maybe Cortez Marine would go in for a 99.99999 % share, and I could own the other .00001 %.

Post up the ad, maybe we can pool our resources. I've been in the market for a tropical paradise island for some years now. :)

Here is the link for the add.

Seeing as I was the first to post the add, I should get first dibs on which week #.
Seamaiden, as you were the first to reply-and suggest a group buy-timeshare deal-you should get second choice.
But wait, let me see-I can't even afford 1/52 of how ever many millions of dollars, so I guess I'd have to claim the seconds of 31449000-31449009.

A thousand dollars an acre is fair, especially in this economy. We actually almost bought about 10 hectares in Bali, but we couldn't agree on the site.

Wow...

The lagoon is not blue ...nor is it full of life.
Its largely choked off from the sea and is full of bubbly algae. It could use about 5,000,000,000 turbo grazers.
The place is surrounded by huge seas often, has no water or no good landing spots and is haunted to boot.
Plus, its full of biting sand flies that seek out mammals to torture.
In the summer it can be so hot with no wind and drive people mad.
It got one ugly angelfish and lotsa Hawaiian species...
The species is safe for all eternity because after we get one good shipment there will be no more demand for it.
I was just there....I was surprised at how er...homely it was. The Mexican diver who caught his first could not believe we had come so far for it. He thought he caught the wrong fish!

Sounds like a lot of other tourist "resorts"! Until you mentioned haunted, I hope that doesn't raise the price. So it doesn't have fresh water, Bonaire didn't either until the Dutch brought in their desalinization technology. Nothing that a few extra million wouldn't solve. Unless, I bet your thinking more of an eco-friendly destination-what with the gentle hum of the native fauna, the lagoon bubbling with uh algae-the wellspring of life-....so we sell bottled water at 5 USD.

Hetero, of course you must realize what course you've set others upon. I've found an island, already developed, in Nicaragua, that runs entirely on green energy. I am gathering a group of like-minded individuals and we will enter into a commune (but you've gotta buy into it). The fishing and farming are all good, too.

I think I like this place a little better also because it has some ELEVATION. Gotta hedge our bets, ya know, gotta be sure we've got a little high ground, just in case. ;)

Seamaiden, I'd love to own an entire island, or .00000001 percent of one! Although my original post was to bring a little lightheartedness to the forum, and to poke a little good natured fun at Cortez Marine, (I heard that he has made the looooooong trip out there), I think it is a brilliant idea for a group of people in the industry or hobby to go in together to buy a whole island. Lake Nicaragua, if I'm not mistaken is home to one of the two (I think) populations of Freshwater Bull sharks. In lake Nicaragua, they are landlocked, how cool is that!

Steve, You think Clipperton's are homely? Does that mean you won't make the long trip back to collect anytime soon?
There are a lot of people out there that will pay big $$$ for some homely fish. Seriously though, if you had been able to get the group of 40 into the U.S., would that have been a profitable venture? BTW, I loved your post (video) of the Clarions. I understand some of the dynamics/economics of rare fish collection/importation/sales, but $$ aside, it is a thrill to see some rare stuff come into the trade, and a bigger thrill to see the unusual stuff en mass like you filmed in the wild.

The bull sharks in Lake Nicaragua travel back and forth between the ocean.
Okay, fine, SOME fat chicks.

I guess I was was wrong about "landlocked", I've never been, so was basing that on what I had heard. Not nearly as cool, bull sharks have been know to swim pretty far up estuaries, even into "fresh" water. Still, a little weid to be collecting cichlids, and then spot a bull shark checking you out!

The problem with living on an island is a category 4 or 5 comes along and wipes your place out. I would know, I lost everything to Hurricane Ike living on Galveston island! ><
