Led Products

Postby pwhofmann » December 5th, 2010, 4:22 pm

I have a 30 gal high reef tank. I have been using an orbit lighting system, of which I am becoming very frustrated with. The unit is about 4 - 5 years old, I have replaced the ballast and the cooling fan, and the cooling fan is about ready to go again after working for only 6 months. I have been reading about the LED systems, and I am wondering if anyone has experience with Orphek, Elos, Ecoxotic, Solarisis or any other system and coral growth.
Thanks,
Bill

Here's a link to my Orphek thread. I'm pretty happy so far. This light is so new that nobody will have any substantial comments about coral growth.

Solaris are no longer made. Do not forget Aqua Illuminations.

BTW. Ecoxotic has a good product and following. Elos is way too expensive IMO. Pacific Sun are well known and Vertex makes one as well. Like stated Orphek is very new and does not have many reviews.

Elos is all about looks; you're paying for them more than you're paying for just the LED fixture. To me the overall aesthetics of the fixture were a big consideration and why I went with an Elos LED. Worth it to me, but certainly not the most cost effective option.

As far the performance of the Elos E-Lite, it’s a middle of the road LED fixture with 18 3w cree LEDs. It performs better than a similar priced ecoxotic fixture for PAR values, but worse than an Aqua Illumination. I keep softies and they grow just fine anywhere in the tank with the E-Lite for lighting, but if I kept SPS I’d limit them to the top third of the tank.

It’s really only a good choice if you love the look of the fixture and care a lot about the overall aesthetics of the tank in your living space.
