Flow Tanks?

Postby seven ephors » January 17th, 2002, 6:17 pm

hi.
Most hi-flow tank are ad hoc design. There are some commerical unit that you can purchase.

Most unit that I have seem are race-track style, but there is one similar to the cylindrical tank in the article at:
http://www.rsmas.miami.edu/groups/hatchery/index.html

These tanks are usually gear toward large volume hatcheries. The use of propeller is one of the more efficient design for low-pressure, high volumn pump.... I don't know what specific info you are looking for, since they are just a simple vessle after all.

Charles,

Do you have any references where a person could read up further on flow tanks, their design, etc? I've looked thru the net and couldn't find much on design, usage, etc.

Thanks!

Shane I have a few references at work ... I'll get them to you on Sunday. As was mentioned ... these tanks are mainly built ad hoc with modifications as needed.

Aloha!

Charles:
In addition to sending them to Shane, I, as well as many others, will be interested in the reference too.

This is great that the author of an article is available after publication to address issues!

It will be even better if this particular forum provide additional reference/link related to the articles... something like a Further Readings or something.

Flow Tanks?

The article that most people cite and base their flow tank designs on is:

Vogel, S. and M. LaBarbera. 1978. Sinple flow tanks for research and teaching. BioScience 28(10):638-643.

I saw this facility about 5 years ago ... it was basically aimed at rearing large fish like red drums as well as Gracilaria algae.

Thanks for looking up the information, Charles. I'll be off to the library this week to look it up!
