Well guys its been a few years since I visited. I moved and got rid of my 125 gallon semi reef tank. Came down here to Atlanta and decided I wanted to get back into fish and started a 75 Gallon freshwater tank. Man that just does not do it for me, so I said hey lets get some discuss in there but the more I look at them the more I realize I need the color and different sizes JUST THE FISH.

So I found a good deal "at least i think so" I got a 135 Acrylic tank, stand and hood for $300.00. I want soft corals, not really interested in going into the hard corals but love the movements of the soft coral. I have a 55 gallon in my basement that I will use as a sump so tell me what I need cause its been a few years and I know things have changed.

Here is my list and add for me as you see fit.

1. Lighting - was going with T5's with additional moonlight stuff.
2. Protein Skimmer, what size and whats the best model these days.
3. I have a UV sterilizer I am not sure if that is still the Norm but I have one.
4. Going with dead rock to build my aquaculture with a few seed live rocks.
5. Play sand - Is a deep sand bed still something thats done?

Also I have been reading about refugiums is that necessary?

Thanks guys, looking to start buying my stuff so I can get this freshwater tank out of my living room.

Refugiums aren't necessary, but once they're established they can make the whole experience go more smoothly and make maintenance a little easier, IMO.

Most of those things are still in use in one form or another. Deep sand beds are not really "in vogue" anymore, but certainly have their uses. Some people swear by, and some people swear at, UV sterilizers. I don't find a need for them but if you have one you may as well use it. They will certainly keep your water clear and IMO can enhance protein skimming.

You'll also need some form of water motion, most folks are using propeller driven pumps nowadays such as the Korallia, Tunze, or Vortech pumps. As for lighting LEDs are all the rage now and would be perfectly suitable for softies in a tank that size.
