I have dosed Iodine irregularly for over a year now. I used to dose on a regular basis, but about 18 months ago, I got a mysterious coralline algae issue. This issue is, the coralline gets covered in a peach fuzz type matter, that is clear and no longer than 1/8" from the surface of the coralline.
After a few days, the coralline turns brown, and flakes off the back wall. I have been able to isolate this substance in connection with my Iodine dosing. If I raise the level by 1ppm, then the substance spreads rapidly. If I do regular maintenance, but skip the Iodine dosing, the substance dies off slowly, and the coralline starts to regrow.
I believe this problem came into my tank from an acropora frag that I put in the tank. After talking with the fellow hobbyist who sold me the frag, I found that he also has this same problem, but never stopped dosing Iodine. He later did stop dosing, and the problem has since improved.
I am curious if anyone has any recent or current information about Iodine and its effects on the Coral Reef Habitat.
