Gee is someone finally rebutting shimek's study of reef aqauriums? All I can say is about time. For the last year I have heard the conclusions of that study quoted as if they were final, conclusively proven scientific findings.
The truth is that using lab grade equipment to measure existing reef tanks at a give point in time proves nothing other that what the tanks have at that point in time. No conculsions can be dawn on how macros absorbed copper, nitrates or anything else. You can not even tell if the copper or nitrates came from the macros to the water or from the water to the macros.
It simply is bad science to use those studies to draw any conculsions about how an aquarium works.
If you want to measure how a plant life absorbs copper than take a given copper level maintain that level, introduce plant life and measure how much copper that plant life absorbs. With that data you can design tanks using that plant life. But not with the Shimek studies.
