Just a friendly word of caution to our newcomers...

The internet can be a great informational resource. As with any internet bulletin board, some of the posts you see appearing in our forums will be factual and helpful, some will simply be opinions that may or may not apply to your situation, and some may be misconceptions that although probably offered with good intentions, are simply false.

To the newcomer the hobby can initially seem confusing because there’s so much to learn. To complicate matters, there are many methods of reefkeeping that have proven successful over the years, and some concepts may seem a bit contradictory. Ultimately everyone finds their own methods and preferences that work for them.

Learning the difference between quality information and questionable information is one of the most difficult aspects of this hobby. While reading threads online, be cautious if only one or two people are advocating a technique while many are on the other side of the fence. It is easy to believe the one or two posts that make spectacular or illogical statements, but there is probably a good reason the idea doesn't have more support. This is one of the reasons why we have, in addition to our moderators and administrators, the RDOTF (Reefs Dot Org Task Force), as well as our library, FAQs, recommended reading lists and Advanced Aquarist Online Magazine.

By relying on quality information from knowledgeable members of our community here at Reefs.Org, as well as reference books, local clubs, etc. you’ll soon be on the right track to a successful reef tank.

Good luck and welcome.
