Guess I should confirm my withdrawal from the contest. I had a lot of fun building the hardware end, but it simply didn't take. The rock and substrate were permanently coated with a "fuzzy" orange-brown algae-like crap that simply wasn't going away nomatter how many 80% water changes I did.

I suspect it's something in the calcite rock I bought - it's likely not as pure as the guaranteed analysis I got. About 3 months ago I moved the survivors into my main reef. The curliques and hermits went up into the surge fuge and are having a great 'ol time. Snails have mingled downstairs. The hardware sits in a corner forgotten until I make another attempt one day.
