Acclimating Montipora digitata

Postby Mike02 » January 18th, 2002, 10:51 am

Is there a special way of acclimating Montipora D.? Should it be kept at the bottom of the tank first then moved to the top? Any advice would be appreciated. thanks

Acclimating Montipora digitata

I would first acclimated to your tank water first. When I add a new frag to my tank, I pour the water from the bag into a bowl and then slowly add some of my tank water. I do this for about a hour then put in the tank. IMO,As far as where to place it would depend what kind of lighting it has been under and how long without light. If I get a frag from a fellow reefer that it was under strong MH then I place toward the top but if I get something that has been shipped in then I normally place it low then slowly raise.

Hope that helps.

Acclimating Montipora digitata

I think you should always place new corals in a lower light area of the tank, irregardless of where it came from. There is always some stress when a coral transfers tanks due to chemistry differnces, water flow rates, etc. Placing a coral in high light can stress it out and put it over the edge, even sps.

With regard to acclimation, I just float the bag, and dump it in after about 15 min. I don't know anybody that drip acclimates there coral.

Acclimating Montipora digitata

Postby Mike02 » January 20th, 2002, 4:10 pm

Hi, thanks. i've had this montipora digitata 2 days and so far, looks good. all the polyps come out under the light. i read somewhere that you should put it at the bottom of the tank for 2 wks and move to the top. i just put this at the top. it was overnighted from premium aquatics (he had it for 3 wks), so i figure its ok to put it at the top to begin with since only the day before, he had it under full lights (as far as i know). this montipora is all brown except for light colored tips. i have 72 watts PC over a 10 gallon. the top of the coral is 1" below water surface.
