optimum conditions for chaetomorpha- are they known?

Postby charles matthews » October 1st, 2006, 12:56 pm

So many of us keep Chaetomorpha as a nutrient removal mechanism. I have been following Randy Holmes-Farley in adding an iron/molybdenum supplement and have noticed increased growth. But some questions:

1) At what level does Chaetomorpha become light saturated? Practically speaking, do higher light levels (in the absence of other limiting factors) lead to higher production?

2) Does spectrum matter, and if so what is a good inexpensive source?

3) Are there any experiments regarding extending the photoperiod from 12 to 24 hours?

4) Would co2 supplementation at a pH of 8.2 (to prevent the rise from bicarbonate use later in the afternoon) increase production?

My own reading of the literature suggests that these questions are still open and anecdotal. I was hoping someone would know of experimental work, or even better if Dana Riddle would use his respirometer and get some very useful information for all of us about this topic.
