Yellowhead Moray

Postby DCskins » January 20th, 2007, 7:25 pm

Does anyone have any experience with a Yellowhead Moray? I'm thinking of buying a small 6-8 inch. I have experience with Snowflake and Zebra.

How big of tank do you have?
G.rueppelliae can grow up to about 3' in length and have a taste for any shrimp, crabs, mollusks and fish that will fit in it's mouth. Like most eels they like to dig in the substrate and will knock over your live rock if it is not secured. Hiding spots in rock caves must be provided.
A fully covered tank with an excellent skimmer is a must.

Yellowhead Moray

Postby DCskins » January 23rd, 2007, 7:39 pm

I have a 110gal, I plan on going bigger in a year or so. I currently have a 3inch Picasso Trigger, 3 inch Maroon Clown, 5inch Voliton Lion, 3 -4 inch Koran Angel, and the meanest purple dottyback (I wish something would take it out). I have a wetdry with a protein skimmer, and a fully covered canopy. I had a snowflake that took his own life do to my negligence on a not fully covered tank. I also have had a large Zebra Moray in the past that I sold. So I do have an idea how to care for these creatures, but do you think he'll go after these fish? Mind you I will order the eel small.

I you keep it well fed with at the same times of the day with chunks of shrimp and squid and do not feed it live feeder fish you may stand a chance that it will not harm your other fish. Miss some feedings and all bets are off.

I fed my other eels twice a week, would this be acceptable for the Yellowhead as well?

I have a yellow head moray eel that's about 2 1/2 feet. Regardless of how often you keep him fed, there is no way to rule out that he won't eat the other fish in your tank...or even take bites out of it.
Looking at the fish you currently have, he will make a quick meal out them in no time.
These eels are aggressive and will eat anything that will fit into their mouth and even if it is too large, it will eat it bite by bite(not all fish mind you). I just lost a Radiata Lionfish that was almost 10inches in size to the eel....went right up behind the lion and bit him in half..ate the tail end and then came back for more...was horrible...he twisted in knots just tearing chunks out of the lion fish...he got stung, but that didn't even phase him one bit! :o(
I've heard of other people keeping these eels with large butterflyfish, surgeon fish, groupers etc. I would not keep lions with them though as they have been known to just kill them for no reason...I found this out a little too late :o(
I would say your clown would be a quick meal and then the lion stands a chance of being picked on as well since they're still smaller...since you may be getting the eel at a smaller size it may be okay with what you have right now, but not for long.
Whatever you decide on doing, definitely be careful and think about it :o) Good luck!
