Removing Clams from Water

By Daniel Knop. Posted to reef-l emailing list, Sunday the 5th of December 1999.

Quick question on moving clams. Are they sensitive to being removed from water?

Just go ahead and do it. The clams are not sensitive to being removed from the water and they can definitely blow out all air that is possibly trapped inside. Just be sure to put them back on the same place where they have been before. If you brush their shells with a toothbrush, be careful not to hurt their soft tissues (e. g. on the byssal orifice at the bottom). And before putting the clams back to the tank I would suggest dipping it into a small container with aquarium water to clean it.
