Internal Overflow for a HOT Protein Skimmer

Instructions on making an internal overflow.

By Karl Hockman

I have a great idea I used for over a year in my 125 reef tank. This is an internal overflow system with a H.O.T. protein skimmer.

PARTS:

  • 1 PVC pipe 18"l x 6"w
  • 1 6" pvc end cap
  • 8-10 ft 1/2" pvc pipe (thin wall)
  • 1 elbow 1/2"
  • 1 ft clear tubing 3/4" dia

DIRECTIONS:

Cut notches in one end of the 6" pvc so water can flow through easily (about 1/3" wide). Cut or drill a hole in the center of the end cap large enough tofit the suction end of a powerhead or submirseable pump in. Secure the pump into the hole on the outside of the end cap, pressure should be able to hold it. Fit the end cap and the 6"tube together cut the 1/2 pvc to length for where you will have you protien skimmer. Fit the pvc pieces together with the elbow and then fit into the pump and the protien skimmer. Run to ensure there are no leaks then install into your tank.

The large overflow (the 6' x18' pvc) should stand in the corner and have some live rock to hold it in place and the 1./2 pipe to be along the bottom of the tank to the elbow then up to the protien skimmer.
